Are each of the 50 states sovereign, and if so, what does that mean?

All of the states are sovereign, which is to say that they are self governing and make their own laws. Though the federal government does have its own laws, most of the laws that we live under are state laws. And those laws generally stand WITHIN THAT STATE provided they don't conflict with the U.S. Constitution and/or Bill of Rights.
