How to tell if its a chemical reaction?

In chemistry lab, Ramond adds several granules of zinc to a beaker containing concentrated hydrochloric acid. Bubbles begin to form in the beaker and the zinc begins to disappear. Has a chemical reaction occured? Explain your answer.
